Tasting Notes: Butcombe Gold

Posted by: Ed Ashby

Brewery: Butcombe
Location: Wrington, Bristol, England
ABV: 4.7%
Version: 500ml bottle

A quick read on their website reveals that the Butcombe Brewery has been operating for 30 years, with the Gold beer introduced in 1998. As befits the name its a rich golden colour (the pic, courtesy of the brewery's website, does a good job of illustrating this), and gives off a lovely light and fresh floral aroma, with a touch of citrus. The flavour is very hoppy, but with a disconcerting dry mouthfeel which tends to detract from the refreshment I would expect an ale of this sort to provide. In keeping with this dryness the finish is quite grassy and earthy, and not particularly pleasant. Lovely to look at and smell, but not one I'll be drinking again.

Aha! One from the Beer Cupboard that I don't have to worry about writing up any more. Cheers Ed! :)

I've got a soft spot for Butcombe, being from that part of the world, but haven't been massively impressed by any of their beer from the bottle. But I once had a pint of Butcombe Gold on tap at the Watchfield Inn near Burnham-on-Sea that was unbelievably good -- as in, all time top 10 good. In short, I'm not sure their beers are complex enough to stand up to pasteurising, filtering and whatnot, but they do seem to like being fresh and cask conditioned.

I had this beer at Paulton football club on draught when my team played away there. I was impressed, I had just drank a worthingtons and enjoyed this alot more. Its got a really nice fruity initial hit and a good hoppy aftertaste. Quite a complex beer all in all. Can't commet out of the bottle as I haven't tried but as Bailey says above its a great pint off the pump.

Drank it recently from draft at the Butcher's Arms, Sheepscombe, midway through a hard cycle ride. Absolutely bloody marvellous!

They had Dorothy Goodbody's Golden Ale on tap the last time I visited. The Butcher's Arms never disappoints :)
