Tasting Notes: Ossett Brewery Treacle Stout

Ossett BreweryBrewery: Ossett Brewery
Location: Ossett, W. Yorkshire, England
ABV: 5.0% ABV
Version: Bottled
Source: Beer Ritz, Leeds

One of the haul of beers I picked up on our pre-Xmas trip to Beer Ritz, Ossett Treacle Stout, from a brewery I'd not encountered before, just looked far too interesting to leave on the shelf.

I sampled it back in January, but I can remember the taste of it even now: a flood of rich, dark, sweet, chewy flavours. Treacle (obviously), liquorice and dark, dark roasted malt. Quite sweet, with very little hop to it at all, but as a winter warmer it performed its job admirably. The only slight disappointment was a thinness to the mouth-feel - I was hoping for something bigger, creamier, a bit more robust - but I expect this is one of those beers you'd really have to sample on draught to get the full benefit.

Still, well worth seeking out if you're a fan of sweet, tasty stouts.

Aaaahhh! Thats was you! Were you with your girlfriend/wife?

I was the annoying chap recommending beer. Sorry I can't help myself in Beer Ritz, I just want to chat to folk about beer.

If I'm right, you picked up a Crown Brewery beer on my recommendation and your partner got an Anchor X-mas beer?

I was also let down by the Treacle Stout. Far too thin and not enough treacle, I could hardly taste it.

Zak has so many great stouts and this is not one of them.
I've been going to Beer Ritz for a while and am always happy to have a chat to Mr Avery. Beer Ritz stock a dizzying amount of beer so have a chat and see what he's enjoyed recently...you can't fail!

No, sorry Rob, that wasn't me... the missus and I were there early December, and I ended up recommending a whole selection of stuff to a chap who was planning a beer tasting party with a few friends - I can't help myself either :)

Posted a list of the beers we bought here. As you say, some damn fine stouts in Beer Ritz and we bought pretty much as many of them as we thought we could carry.
