About Blog o’ Beer
About the Blog
Blog O' Beer is a spare-time blog project set up by four blokes who like to talk about beer. None of us are professionals in the brewing industry, none of us are trained beer tasters or connoisseurs; we're just enthusiastic amateurs who like beer and thought we'd set up a blog to talk about the stuff (mostly among ourselves, we do realise...)
Hopefully we'll learn as we go along and our tasting notes will improve with time...
About the Bloggers
Ed Ashby lives in a small town on the east coast of Northern Ireland and works for the NHS, so is the only one here with a proper job. He listens to a broad range of music, with an emphasis on the heavier metal oriented form, reads across the SF, fantasy and horror genres with occasional excursions into other territories such as crime, history and science, and watches films from around the world, with a particular leaning towards the far east. He also enjoys playing online chess (more averagely than Darren).
Ed's beer preferences are for ales, stouts and porters but will try nearly anything beer-related once. Living in Northern Ireland means a severe lack of decent pubs serving proper beer so he has to depend on several reliable off-licences to keep him supplied with the decent stuff and discover new brews to sample.

Joe Gordon lives in Edinburgh where in-between promoting comics, science fiction and fantasy for a well-known British comics company enjoys cultural pastimes such as moaning about tourists, supporting the historic pubs of the city and the fine Caledonian Brewery, as well as taking in Edinburgh's various world-famous festivals, especially the Film and Book Festivals, and writing about them too. Much of the rest of his time is taken up with incoherent ranting on his Woolamaloo Gazette blog or entertaining his cats.
Joe's beer preferences are varied and he enjoys trying different ales from Edinburgh's many fine real ale pubs, but he has a special place in his liver for his local Caledonian Brewery and their beer created with original open-fired Victorian coppers.

Tim Lebbon is an award-winning horror and fantasy writer, currently residing in a nice little village in South Wales with his wife, two children and a dog named Blu. He spends most of his days at home making up stuff, with occasional expeditions into the local woods to walk Blu and build dams with his kids.
He loves music - favourite bands range from Flogging Molly, to Metallica, to Muse, to Thin Lizzy, to Fields of the Nephilim. His local pub once served Hobgoblin for the duration of a couple of weeks, so it will always have a place in Tim's heart.
He's willing to try all types of ale, but his preference leans more towards the darker ales, stouts and porters. He's bald, and doesn't care. It's his ambition to grow a mohican. Check him out: www.timlebbon.net.

Darren Turpin lives in Manchester and works in online marketing for the UK's leading sf and fantasy publishing imprint. He's married (to the lovely Jo, a loyal Guinness drinker) with no kids and one cat (Hobbes). He supports Bury FC, listens to a wide range of (mainly guitar-oriented) music, reads as voraciously as possible across the sf, fantasy, horror and crime genres, plays online chess (fairly averagely) and has decided to learn to play the guitar himself at some point, hopefully soon.
Darren's beer preferences tend to run to the strong, dark, winter ales, as well as stouts and porters.
Favourite tipples include:
- Brewdog - Rip Tide Stout, Paradox Stout
- Wychwood - Hobgoblin
- Highgate - Old Ember
- Nick Hambelton's Ales - Nightmare Stout
- York Brewery - Centurion's Ghost
- Holts - Fifth Sense, Pioneer
- Meantime - India Pale Ale, London Porter
